What the shading means

Compare: Own region compares the selected month with that region’s own seasonal range. Between regions compares accommodation density between regions in the selected month. Both modes keep month selection active.

Each region uses a named weather station, not a spatial temperature average. Region shading shows a planning reference, not a forecast.

Seasonal tourism activity uses covered overnight accommodation. The within-area view uses the same 1–5 bands as the monthly grid, measured between each area’s annual minimum and maximum. Percentage of peak remains supporting detail, not the colour scale. The across-area view uses separate 1–5 density bands for daily overnight stays per km² across whole regions, with fixed thresholds across all months.

Terrain starts overhead. Adjust the tilt to see the relief with fixed 8× elevation exaggeration. Exaggerated heights are for visibility, not accurate vertical scale. Use Fit to return to the whole-country view.

Neither measure counts everyone present. Day visitors, many small rentals, residents and commuters are outside this proxy. Our crowding objective includes all people, regardless of where they live.

Large rural regions can dilute concentrated town activity. In Both view, colour represents temperature and patterns represent activity bands: sparse dots, dense dots, sparse lines, dense lines and cross-hatch. Green replaces the overlay when a region matches both temperature and activity preferences.

Terrain controls and help

Control + click + drag, or right-click + drag: move up/down to adjust tilt and left/right to rotate. Drag normally to pan. Scroll or use + / − to zoom. Click the compass to return to north-up. On touch screens, drag with two fingers to tilt and twist to rotate. Elevation is exaggerated 8× to make relief visible, not to show accurate vertical proportions.

Keyboard: arrow keys pan, + / − zoom, Shift + up/down adjusts tilt, and Shift + left/right rotates.
